A local fixture since 1984, the Urban Harvest Farmers Market “cultivates thriving communities through gardening and access to healthy, local food.” The market began from humble beginnings and is now home to dozens of vendors that offer everything from grass-fed beef to fresh produce. It’s an easy drive from our apartments in Houston and provides drive-thru pickup on Saturdays between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Just order online, and once you arrive, your items will be placed in your car. Participating vendors include:
At Katerra Exotics, the bison graze freely on hardy Texas Hill Country grasses. The animals are never given antibiotics or growth hormones, and the ranchers believe that keeping the bison calm produces a “far superior cut of meat.” You can also order chicken breasts, lamb chops, and New York strip steaks.
Hive Bee Farm
Sandi Murray has always loved planting flowers and any vegetable she can grow in her hot Houston soil. She became interested in beekeeping in 2016, and after taking classes, she purchased her first two hives. That’s how the Hive Bee Farm was born. Sandi re-homes bees from across the city, and boasts that her products go from hive to hand. Offerings include honey squares, bee butter, and bourbon barrel-aged honey.
The bakers at Artisana Bread create the old-fashioned way. They make everything by hand and use organic flour milled from local wheat whenever possible. The pastry creams and fillings are also made fresh, and the selection may rotate. Bread offerings include Scottish oatmeal, Italian olive, and flax sunflower sourdough.
After placing your order, try your hand at online drawing classes offered by local teachers. You’re sure to enhance your skills in no time.
