Spend the Day Outdoors at These Natural Parks near Houston

Explore the state and natural parks near Houston this summer.

Come summertime, you might start to crave a break from the city to reunite with nature. Although Houston offers dozens of incredible green spaces, there are also numerous exquisite state parks just a short drive away from Tiburon Apartments. Escaping for a weekend under the trees is the perfect solution to sizzling temperatures and cabin fever. Head out to these three natural parks near Houston that are just an hour’s drive away.

Sheldon Lake State Park

Perched just beyond Houston’s east side, Sheldon Lake State Park is all about boating, fishing, hiking, and wildlife sightings. The main half-mile trail circles through prairie, wetlands, and 28 natural ponds full of native animals. Be sure to save time to stroll through the Pond Center for lessons on sustainable living and gardening. Also, make time to climb the new John Jacob Observation Tower. The view from the top offers a panoramic scene that you won’t want to miss. It’s possible to see past the reaches of the park all the way towards the San Jacinto Monument and downtown Houston.

Lake Houston Wilderness Park

For an entirely different experience, head north about 37 miles out to the spectacular forests of the Lake Houston Wilderness Park. Come to this park for horseback riding and kayaking. Also, you can spend a weekend picnicking and camping. Then go swimming in the creek or take a stroll down the easy, two-mile hiking path. Visit the Nature Center for a chance to view and hold native species of turtles, snakes, frogs, and other small animals.

Brazos Bend State Park

Alternatively, drive south of Houston to the Brazos Bend State Park. This park is well-known for its close encounters with alligators and bird watching opportunities. Numerous lakes and forested hiking trails offer a beautiful respite from the heat, even though swimming and boating are prohibited. Also, the park boasts an observatory, official campsites, and a Nature Center where visitors can pet baby alligators.
