A nonprofit organization, the Texas State Aquarium inspires appreciation for our seas and supports wildlife conservation. It’s home to thousands of creatures and offers a fun way to learn about the species found in both the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. The fascinating virtual exhibits take viewers on an unforgettable journey to discover the “mesmerizing secrets of the underwater and jungle worlds.” Here is some of what you can enjoy from our Houston apartments:
Islands of Steel
Islands of Steel features an array of marine life, including a loggerhead sea turtle named Tiki. She came to the aquarium after her fins became entangled in a fishing line. Loggerhead sea turtles weigh up to 3,000 pounds. They’re the largest of all hard-shelled turtles and are named for their large heads and strong jaws.
Stingray Lagoon offers a unique look at the astounding anatomy of a stingray. One of the rays you’ll discover is the southern stingray. Found in both the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, these rays are docile animals that prefer shallow coastal waters. They have a diamond-shaped disc that’s white on the underside and gray, black, or dark brown on the upper side. The colors provide camouflage in the sand, where they spend most of their days.
Portraying life at the shoreline, Nearshore features everything from alligators to chirping birds. It highlights how Lone Star State residents can work together to protect the Texas coast’s wetland habitat and the animals that depend on it. During the tour, you’ll learn about green herons, sheepshead fish, and much more.
