If you enjoy learning about another time and place, curl up with one of today’s bestselling historical fiction novels. The Houston Public Library offers thousands of e-books in this genre, including these three titles that you can enjoy from your home at our Houston apartments.

The Lost Girls of Paris

Inspired by true events, The Lost Girls of Paris is called “historical fiction at its finest.” Set in 1946, it tells the story of Grace Healey. One fateful morning, she discovers an abandoned suitcase at the train station. Inside are dozens of photographs, each of a different woman. Grace quickly realizes the suitcase belonged to the leader of the female secret agents who deployed out of London during the war. But 12 of these women never came home. Intrigued by the mystery, Grace sets out to learn the truth about the women in the pictures. Along the way, she uncovers a story of friendship, valor, and betrayal.

News of the World

A National Book Award finalist, News of the World follows Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd on his 1870 journey through northern Texas. He gives readings from newspapers to paying audiences. Along the way, he’s offered a fifty dollar gold piece to take an orphan to her family in San Antonio. The terrain makes the trip difficult, and at times dangerous. Especially when Johanna throws away her shows and tries to run away at every turn. Once at their final destination, the reunion is neither happy nor welcome. Now Captain Kidd must decide if he should leave Johanna where she’s not wanted, or become a kidnapper in the eyes of the law.

A Dangerous Act of Kindness

Written by L.P. Fergusson, A Dangerous Act of Kindness offers the tale of widow Millie Sanger. When she discovers Lukas Schiller on her land, she decides to take him in. An injured enemy pilot, she knows he’ll be killed if discovered. They form an unexpected bond. But when the fury of World War II finally tears them apart, they know that their secret must never be uncovered.
